PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive paper sheet handling apparatus detecting a transparent material such as vinyl mail or the like to feed, classify and accumulate the same without generating jamming up to an objective classifying port. SOLUTION: A first sensor 100 (ultrasonic sensor) capable of detecting the whole of paper sheets (consisting of transparent and opaque portions) and a second sensor 101 (optical sensor) detecting only the opaque portions of paper sheets are arranged on the upstream side of a branch part and, from the difference between the lengths of the paper sheets obtained by using the respective sensors, it is judged whether the paper sheets are vinyl mail and, only with respect to the vinyl mail, the control of a distributing gate is performed on the basis of the distance from the first sensor 100 to the distributing gate 12 and, with respect to paper sheets usually comprising an opaque material, the control of the distributing gate is performed by utilizing a distributing gate timing sensor 16 provided at every branch part. By this constitution, the collision jamming of the distributing gate with mail generated from detection delay caused by a transparent portion can be eliminated.
