PURPOSE: An error estimating apparatus of a phase trace loop is provided to enhance the trace speed and performance of a phase trace loop by introducing a weight function of a square function upon estimating a phase error. CONSTITUTION: First and second sign storage units(11, 21) stores the signs of inputted I and Q signals. First and second absolute value calculators(12, 22) takes the absolute values of the inputted I and Q signals. First to sixth quantizers(13-15, 23-25) quantize the I and Q signals outputted from the first and second absolute value calculators(12, 22). First, second, fourth, and fifth multiplexers(16, 17, 28, 29) multiplex the I and Q signals outputted from the first to sixth quantizers(13-15, 23-25). A first sign inverter(18) inverts the sign of the I signal outputted from the second multiplexer(17).
