The floating element has a floating body, forward and rear air bearing surfaces (24,31) formed on the underside (19) of the body near the upstream and downstream ends, and a forward raised surface (33) upstream of and higher than the rear air bearing surface. A forward wall (34) is provided between an upstream end of the rear air bearing surface and a downstream end of the forward raised surface. At least one lateral wall (35) is provided between a lateral edge of the rear air bearing surface and the underside of the floating body without being interrupted by a step. An Independent claim is also included for a storage disc drive and a method of manufacturing an air bearing floating element.
