A fluid level detection system includes an illumination source (10) and a photodetector (12). The illumination source (10) produces a beam at a fixed angle, which the photodetector (12) is adapted to sense as it is reflected from the surface of a fluid (16). The photodetector (12) varies in accord with the amount of the reflected beam that impinges on it. This amount, in turn, varies with the distance between the surface of the fluid (16), the illumination source (10) and the photodetector (12). The system can be used, for example, in automated pipette applications in which it is important to ascertain the position of a pipette tip (14) with respect to fluid (16) contained within a body to provide safe and effective automatic processing of the fluid (16) without the pipette tip (14) contacting the body.
