The length measuring device has a bar (1) to which a ruler (2) is displaceably attached. At one end of the bar (1) is an arm (7) pivotally attached by a hinge (6). A second arm (10) is also attached to the bar (1) by means of a slider guide (8) so that it can be moved along the bar and is also pivotal relative to the bar. The guide may have a slider block to which the second arm is pivotally attached by a hinge. The ruler (2) is preferably formed such that its zero mark can be read together with one of the arms and that the length to be measured is read off at the other arm.
