A monitoring system has in the over-current range for different current values, different maximum permissible gas temperature limit values specified. A monitoring device (6) compares the actual gas temperature with the maximum permissible gas temperature for the actual current value. A switch-off command is output when the gas temperature reaches or exceeds the maximum permissible value. In the current range up to the rated value, the relations between current values and actual gas temperatures to be expected for the new state of the switch contacts of switchgear are established. The device outputs an alarm signal when the maximum permissible value is reached or exceeded.
