WINCHING APPARATUS

Winching apparatus comprises a probe (1) and a data storage and processing unit (3) that are interconnected by an elongate fibre-optic cable (2) that transmits data between the probe (1) and unit (3). The cable (2) is wound on a non-rotary spool (4) around and is unwound by a rotary arm (6) that orbits the spool (4). The arm may also move laterally relative to the spool. The invention enables direct connection of the probe to the data storage and processing unit without the need for slip-rings or the like and so allows the use of a fibre-optic cable. It may also be used to transport fluid along a pipeline.
