The invention relates to a fossil fuel fired steam generator (2) which has a combustion chamber (4) which is designed for an approximately horizontal mai n direction of flow (26) of the fuel gas (G). On the heating gas side a vertic al gas extractor (8) is mounted downstream of a horizontal gas extractor (6). T he external walls (9) of the combustion chamber (4) are formed by evaporator tubes (10). The aim of the invention is to keep temperature differences between adjacent evaporator tubes (10) of the combustion chamber (4) to a minimum at all load states of the steam generator (2). To this end, a first group (18) and a second group (20) of the evaporator tubes (10) can be impinged in parallel with a flow medium (S), said first group (18) being mounted in series with the second group (20) of the evaporator tubes (10).
