A shelter (10) particularly suitable for use as a beach shelter includes a support (30) which supports a canopy (12) to which are attached a number of discrete side wall portions (14). Adjacent side wall portions (14) are attached with each other at one or more discrete points, preferably at the base (44) of the side wall portions (14), and in one or two positions between the bases (44) of the side wall portions (14) and the upper edge (42) of the side wall portions (14) where they join the canopy (12). The attached side wall portions (14) provide a generally enclosed shelter which allows wind to safety pass through the shelter (10) while substantially blocking external light.
