Ultrasound (18) is directed against the trough (6) in the bridge deck direction and the amplitude of the ultrasound reflected by the deck (2) is analyzed to see if any cracks are present. The method for ultrasonically detecting unwelcome cracks in a joint between a trough (6) and bridge deck (2), comprises directing an ultrasound wave into the trough in the bridge deck direction, so that the wave becomes reflected by the deck and by any cracks present. The amplitude of the reflection caused by the deck and any cracks is determined to see if cracks are present, which results in a greater echo signal.
