The invention relates to a fossil fuel fired steam generator. The aim of the invention is to provide a fossil fuel fired steam generator (2) with which t he combustion chamber (4) can be especially easily adapted to a predetermined performance range and for varying qualities of different fossil fuels (B). T o this end, the inventive steam generator (2) has a first combustion chamber ( 4) and a second combustion chamber (5) which have a respective number of burner s (30) for fossil fuels (B). Said combustion chambers are designed to have an approximately horizontal main direction of flow (24) of the fuel gas (G). Sa id first combustion chamber (4) and said second combustion chamber (5) lead to a common horizontal gas extractor (6) which is mounted on the heating gas side upstream of a vertical gas extractor (8).
