The analyte is investigated for aging component(s), resulting from use. The sensitive layer employed, includes ceramic. An Independent claim is included for an oil quality sensor based on the foregoing principles, used in an internal combustion engine. An existing component is used, already in contact with the oil, its surface being specially adapted for reincorporation of the indicative component. Preferred features: The sol-gel phase in its unwashed state contains less than 25 wt% of the model substance.
