The extender for the safety belt in a car comprises an axially movable rod with a gripping element at the free end to grab the belt, a motor assigned to the rod and a device to control the motor, operable by sensors. The rod (22) is located in a protective sleeve (20). The gripping element is a gripping finger (30) connected with the rod through a linkage. It can be pivoted automatically into a belt-catching position when the rod is extended out of the protective sleeve.
