PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an oil return passage for an engine without incurring insufficient oil return and engine enlargement. SOLUTION: An oil return passage is constructed in an engine comprising an upper block 1 and a lower block 2 split by a horizontal plane passing through the center of a crank shaft 7 and a cylinder block where an oil pan 3 is joined to a lower face of the lower block. The oil return passage comprises grooves 34a, 34b, 34c running from a joint face with a cylinder head of the upper block through an outer side of a balancing shaft 16a installed inside a side wall of the cylinder block, a joint face of the upper block and the lower block, an inner side of a balancing shaft 16b, and up to the oil pan 3. By this configuration return oil from the cylinder head can be returned directly to the oil pan by way of an independent passage bypassing the crankcase.
