PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To discriminate a core as a coil gap and the line of a coil valley part from a bright region on an image generated between the mountain parts of a coil. SOLUTION: A first illumination 3 and a second illumination 4 are switched by an illumination control part 5 by using a gap inspecting device 1 of a coil with a core, and a coil 2 with a core can be image picked-up by a TV camera 6. Then, a first illuminated image is obtained by illumination in a vertical direction and a second illuminated image is obtained by illumination in an oblique direction, and the second illumination image is binarized by an arithmetic part 9, and the black and white of the second illumination image is inverted and a density inverted image can be obtained, and the logical product of the density inverted image and the first illuminated image is calculated to generate a composite image, and the composite image is binarized so that a composite binarized image can be generated. Thus, the gap of the coil 2 with a core can be detected from the image of the gap of the composite binarized image.
