PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the paper sheet supply capacity of a sheet feeder and reduce the whole size of the feeder. SOLUTION: A sheet feeder 1 for actuating a feed roller 92c with a friction mechanism 92c1 and a pickup roller 2a to feed paper sheets P to a downstream conveyor 99 uses two sensors 3e and 3f for detecting paper sheets P reaching the pickup roller 2a and downstream conveyor 99, and a controller 4 for regulating the driving speed of the pickup roller 2a and driving or stopping the feed roller 92c with the friction mechanism 92c1 depending upon the presence or absence of paper sheets P the sensors 3e and 3f detect.
