PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record sampled fingerprint data in a memory and to utilize them for discriminating a failure in the case of erroneous operation occurrence when the sampled fingerprint data are not matched with previously registered fingerprint data. SOLUTION: A fingerprint pattern (image data) outputted from a fingerprint sampling part 1 is preserved in a temporary fingerprint pattern storage part 12. When feature point data are not matched as a result of collation of feature point data in a collation part 10, the fingerprint pattern in the temporary fingerprint pattern storage part 12 is recorded in a storage part 14 such as EEOROM by a write processing part 13.
