PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject fiber capable of obtaining simply and in a good operating property, also hardly generating dyeing specks, excellent in touch feeling, spontaneous elongating property and suitable for a knitted or woven fabric by heat-setting a polyester stretched fiber obtained under a specific condition by using a crepe-surfaced roller. SOLUTION: This method for producing a polyester fiber having a spontaneous elongating property obtained by stretching at <=110 deg.C stretching temperature and at >=110 deg.C heat-setting temperature comprises performing the heat setting by using a crepe-surfaced roller having 2-8S surface coarseness. Further, the fiber is preferably stretched so as to have <=2.5 Uster irregularity of the stretched fiber, <=0.4 standard deviation of boiling water shrinkages in its longitudinal direction, the drawing ratio of <= its natural drawing ratio(NDR)×0.75 and further 5-40% structure uniformity parameter (ε0.2) of the polyester fiber having spontaneous elongating property.
