PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high density magnetic recording medium with high track density and high line recording density in which servo signals are recorded and which has excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics, high output, high resolution, high S/N ratio and excellent travelling durability. SOLUTION: In a magnetic recording medium in which servo signals are recorded, at least one base coating layer and a magnetic layer are formed in this order on a nonmagnetic supporting body. The magnetic layer has <=0.20 μm thickness, and the magnetic powder in the magnetic layer is ferromagnetic iron alloy powder containing Co and rare earth elements and having <=0.15 μm average major axial length, with the average major axial length L and the min. recording wavelength λ having the relation of L/λ<=1/3. The magnetic layer contains carbon black having a larger particle size than the thickness of the magnetic layer. |
