PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine lubricating mechanism permitting a normal combustion and a positive oil return in an operating condition of an engine falling sideways. SOLUTION: A lubricating system for a four cycle engine feeds oil from an oil pan 18 installed adjacent to a crankcase 16 to the crankcase and a cam case 34 housing both inlet and exhaust valve mechanisms, lubricates each moving parts, and circulates the oil. The lubricating system is configured such that the oil pan is segregated from the crankcase so that no oil leaks outside in any inclined conditions. The lubricating system further comprises a connecting passage 32 communicating the crankcase and the cam case, secondary oil feed means 70 to feed oil mist in the crankcase by a positive pressure in the crankcase by way of the connecting passage, and return oil passages 84, 84' punched to interconnect the cam case and the oil pan. At an aperture of the return oil passages in the can case, oil suction means 130 which can immerse its head in oil is removably disposed.
