PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid damage to documents and waste of sheets on jams during document feeding by stopping the feeding immediately. SOLUTION: A document case 40 with closed sides 401 and 402 is similar in shape to a folder. The other sides are open to allow documents to be easily inserted in the document case 40 therethrough. The document case 40 has a cutout 42 that permits an image edge sensor in the document feeder to detect the trailing edge of documents. The lateral side 402 of the document case 40 has a mark 41 having black and transparent portions alternating at constant intervals. The mark 41 is optically read in by a mark detecting sensor always during the feeding of the document case 40.
