PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermosetting epoxy resin compsn. which, when used as an undercoat in coating, exhibits an excellent adhesion to a surface to be coated, does not cause discoloration of a coating, and does not foam at the time of curing. SOLUTION: This compsn. comprises 100 pts.wt. of an epoxy resin, 2 or more pts.wt. of an org. carboxylic acid, 3-10 pts.wt. of silica, and 2-20 pts.wt. of calcium oxide. The epoxy rein pref. comprises 20-60 pts.wt. of an epoxy resin having a polyether skeleton in the main chain, 10-60 pts.wt. of an epoxy resin having a polybutadiene skeleton in the main chain, and 0-30 pts.wt. of a bisphenol-A type epoxy resin.
