PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the apparent time required for reading without useless look-ahead processing. SOLUTION: The optical disk read controller reads data from an optical disk while look-ahead processing based on an instruction from a host computer, stores the read date in a cache memory and makes them read by the host computer. A look-ahead control part obtains the number of the data inside the cache memory (S102), obtains a rotation number set at present (S103), obtains the number N of the data inside the cache memory corresponding to optimum look-ahead start timing from the obtained rotation number and seek time (S104) and supplies an instruction to start look-ahead (S106) when the data stored in the cache memory become equal to or less than the number N of the data (YES in S105).
