Relates to a number of compound materials in which the metal matrix is austenitic or ferritic stainless steel and the reinforcement is intermetallic (AlCr2, γ- TiAl, Ni3Al, NiAl, Fe3Al, etc.) in amounts varying between 1% and 15% by volume. The consolidation of these materials was performed by powder metallurgy forming. In this process, the materials in powder form are mixed, compacted and finally sintered. These materials have both excellent corrosion resistance and wear resistance making them particularly applicable in structural applications in sectors such as the aeronautical and motor vehicle sectors and for use as biocompatible materials. <IMAGE>
