PURPOSE: A device and a method for preventing overload of a compressor is provided to prevent overload of a compressor by reduction-operating a compressor at an early stage of operation of an air conditioner or a vehicle travels an uphill road and to obtain improvement of engine output and fuel efficiency. CONSTITUTION: By turning on an air conditioner switch, an unload valve is turned on. After a certain time, the unload valve is turned off. The unload valve is turned on when an unload valve on/off switch is turned on by deciding if there if an input of the unload valve switch on/off switch. While there is not an input of the unload valve on/off switch, the unload valve is turned on if Td is more than -1 and less than 1. The unload valve is turned off when Td is not more than -1 and less than 1, but Td is less than 1. Thereby, overload of a compressor is prevented.
