PURPOSE: A method is provided to set shift amount of a shift roller in order to reduce occurrence of a wedge or a tilt. CONSTITUTION: A shift roller contains an upper work roll and a lower work roll. The moving direction of one work roll is considered as (+) and the other's is considered as (-). The width of a N-1th plate and a Nth plate are obtained to calculate changing amount of the widths. If the changing amount is less than zero, shift changing amount is obtained according to a formula which is Swn = SSIGN multiplied (deltaW/2). Work roll shift amount is obtained by a formular which is deltaSn = deltaS - Swn. If the changing amount is more than zero, the shift changing amount is obtained according to a formula which is Swp = SSIGN multiplied (deltaW/2). The work roll shift amount is obtained by a formula which is deltaSp' = deltaS + Swp. If the changing amount is equalized with zero, an initial work roll shift set value becomes work roll shift amount. By the work roll shift amount values, the work roll is shifted.
