PURPOSE: A device for aligning a playback head of adaptive type for a VCR playback mode is provided to reduce a skew distortion while maintaining the quality of images by adjusting the gap between SP/EP head cores. CONSTITUTION: A video signal is read by using first/second heads(161A,161B). First/second transformers(163A,163B) of a piezo-electric element driving unit(160) convert the output signals of the heads into electric signals. First/second amplify units(165A,165B) amplify the output signals of the first/second transformers for a certain rate. A phase comparing circuit(167) compares the phases of the output signals from the first/second amplify units, and the difference is outputted to a piezo-electric element driving circuit(169). The piezo-electric element driving circuit controls a piezo-electric element power supply unit(140) for controlling the piezo-electric element. Therefore, the distance between SP/EP head cores is adjusted for a certain value applied for the video type. When the distance between the head cores is adjusted, a skew distortion is reduced while obtaining a clear image.
