PURPOSE: An apparatus for processing caption and a method thereof are provided to process caption signal selectively according to the status of the caption mode. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for processing caption includes a mixed image signal converter(240), a caption decoder(270), a brightness/color signal splitter(300), an image processor(260), a mixer(280), and a microprocessor(250). The mixed image signal converter(240) receives the brightness/color signal and converts the received signal to a mixed image signal. The caption decoder(270) decodes the caption signal and generates R,G,B and blanking signal. The brightness/color signal splitter(300) separates the brightness/color signal from the mixed image signal. The image processor(260) generates the R,G,B and blanking signal from the brightness/color signal splitter(300). The mixer(280) mixes the R,G,B and blanking signal from the caption decoder the R,G,B and blanking signal from the image processor. The microprocessor(250) processes the output of the mixer.
