PURPOSE: A projection type image display device is provided to embody an optical system of high efficiency using two optical modulators and enhance the uniformity of illumination to remove shimmering phenomenon. CONSTITUTION: A projection type image display device comprises a light source(102), a hybrid prism system(108), first to third dichroic filters(112,116,122), first to reflective third optical modulators(114,118,124) and a projection lens(130). The hybrid prism system(108) consists of an optical pipe(108) and a prism(107). The first and second dichroic filters(112,116) divide light into first and second color beams and the third dichroic filter(122) divides the light into a third color beam. The optical modulators(114,118) are attached to the prism(107) and modulate the first and second beams into images. The modulator(124) is attached to the optical pipe(108) and modulates the third beam into image.
