PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical instrument variable in focal distance in which an optical unit is not moved by the effect of the backlash by the external force irrespective of the focal distance change and stop position of the optical unit. SOLUTION: If zooming action is stopped (S014), and the stop position of a lens barrel when the zooming action in the direction of the long focal distance is stopped is on the focal point end side shorter than the extreme value (S015), or the stop position of the lens barrel when the zooming action in the direction of the short focal length is stopped is on the longer focal point end side than the extreme value (S020), the motor is controlled so that the lens barrel is moved over the stop position in the take-in direction, and then taken out to the stop position (S016).
