PURPOSE: A method for estimating a motion is provided to perform a fast search by searching partial areas of a first layer of a sub-sampling image and a second layer of an original image. CONSTITUTION: A method for estimating a motion comprises the steps of: determining a first motion vector by searching a predetermined area of pixel blocks of a first layer corresponding to current processed pixel blocks of a second layer; taking an intermediate value of blocks adjacent to current processed pixel blocks of a second layer and setting up a half value of the intermediate value as an initial search point corresponding to the first layer; determining a second motion vector by searching the predetermined area of the initial search point; determining a smaller motion vector of the first and the second motion vectors as an initial motion vector for a current block; and determining a final motion vector by searching the predetermined area of the initial motion vector.
