PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens system having a size similar to two-group zoom lens although it is a three-group zoom lens by providing in order from the object side a negative first lens group, a positive second lens group, and a negative third lens group, and satisfying a specified condition. SOLUTION: In order from the object side, a negative first lens group 10, a positive second lens group 20 and a negative third lens group 30 are provided. A zooming lens system zooming by moving the three lens groups from the first lens group 10 to the third lens group 30 in the optical axis direction is constituted. In this case, 0.05<d12W/fW<0.35 is satisfied, where d12W: the distance between the first lens group 10 and the second lens group 20 at a short focal distance end, fW: the focal distance of the full system at the short focal distance end. Hereby although this is a telephoto type three group zoom lens of zoom ratio of 3.5-4, the zoom lens of size similar to a two group zoom lens in the front lens diameter and the full length can be provided.
