PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-reliability document reader, which secures a satisfactory read performance by preventing not only the damage of a guide member and a scanning optical system but also falling out of the scanning optical system from the guide member, even at the time when a force different from that for normal scanning operation. SOLUTION: A second mirror unit 5 provided with second and third mirrors which reflect the reflected light from a document is slided on a rail 10 by sliders 15a and 15b. When the second mirror unit 5 is struck against an optical frame body 22 by a force due to oscillation for transportation or drop or a physical force such as an artificial force for assembling, so that an butting position F is always under the centroid of the second mirror unit.
