PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an image scanner which drives with low power consumption by realizing document carrying suitable for a set read resolution and reducing the main body size and efficiently carrying the document. SOLUTION: Read resolution of an image scanner 14 is made switchable, and two kinds of read resolutions 300 ppi and 600 ppi can be selected. A control circuit 17 controls the excitation pattern of a stepping motor 16 in coping with the selected read resolution. In this case, two-phase excitation is adopted when the read resolution is 300 ppi, and 1-2-phase excitation is adopted when it is 600 ppi.
