PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily make an image display device thin and lightweight and to attain high picture quality by arranging phosphors and ultraviolet luminous elements in sequence on a transparent substrate so that the phosphors absorb ultraviolet light and emit visible light. SOLUTION: Phosphors 3, multiple first electrodes 4 arranged nearly in parallel to each other, an ultraviolet luminescent film 5 and second electrodes 6 arranged nearly in parallel to each other and nearly perpendicularly to the first electrodes 4 are laminated in sequence on a transparent substrate 2. The first electrode 4, the ultraviolet luminescent film 5 and the second electrode 6 form an ultraviolet luminous EL element 7. The controller of this image display device controls the electric field applied between the first electrodes 4 and the second electrodes 6. When the electric field is applied between the first electrodes 4 and the second electrodes 6, the ultraviolet EL elements 7 emit ultraviolet light with the wavelength 400 nm or below. The phosphors 3 wavelength-convert the ultraviolet light into visible light and emit it in the opposite direction to the incidence direction of the ultraviolet light. |
