PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently use an extended memory area of a RAM used for motion compensation prediction coding/decoding processing. SOLUTION: A RAM 15 used for motion compensation prediction coding/ decoding processing has a memory section 21, in addition to a memory section 20 required for coding/decoding processing conventionally to extend memory capacity. An image data storage section 20a of the memory section 20 is used for storing an input image and a reference image and a buffer memory 20b is used for storing coded data when coding them respectively. The memory section 21 is used to store, e.g. coded data in the case of decoding reproduced coded data from a recording medium. Contents of the memory section 21 is repeatedly rewritten. For example upon the receipt of a repetitive reproduction instruction, writing is stopped, and data between a read address at that time and an address storing the remotest past coded data are read repeatedly, decoded, and the decoded image is displayed. |
