PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a circuit and a method for substituting a usable memory line for a defective memory line. SOLUTION: A is method for substituting usable memory line for a defective memory line includes a process, which determines the presence of the defective line by testing a memory array 10, a process for discriminating the defective line, when the detective line is found and for storing the discrimination of the line in a software program having characteristics of a memory, a process for initializing and using the memory when a computer having the memory is enabled, a process for loading the discrimination of the defective line in the memory to a register coupled with the memory, and a process for passing defective line to an alternative line, when the address of the defective line is presented for wiring or reading.
