PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain high-definition characters on an output device regardless of kinds of characters and sizes of output characters. SOLUTION: A high-definition character generating system is to be constructed by allowing a CPU 1 to read the character generating and processing program stored in external storaged devices 9 and to execute it. The character generating and processing program consists of programs generating characters capable of being outputted from an output device, that is, a CRT or a printer 11 as high-definition characters and the program is to be supplied from a floppy disk or a CD or the like. In the character generating and processing program, a processing judging whether characters are to be generated in a multilevel format or in a binary format is performed based on output sizes, character codes and the characteristics of the output device at the time of generating characters for font data having a vector format, and a processing generating either multilevel characters or binary characters based on this judgement result are performed.
