PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader for preventing the displacement of a placed original when opening/closing a platen cover. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with a positioning part 4 which functions as a member for defining an original placing area on a platen glass 1 and projects into the original placing area and also which is provided with an original cover part 4A facing the surface of the platen glass 1 with a gap on the top part. In the case of copying, the end part of the original 2 is inserted into the gap and brought into contact with the side part of the positioning part 4 so that the original may be positioned.
