PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for estimating loss in a splice formed between optical fibers only through the use of an image indicating the contour of the splice after splicing work. SOLUTION: An ordinary temperature of the end parts of two optical fibers to be joined are taken before and after fusion splicing. The type of core deformation is determined from the outer contours of the fibers on the basis of the pictures. Based on the core deformation type, only by measuring the positions of the outer contours in relation to each other in the pictures, the magnitude of corresponding typical deformation is determined. Next, it is possible to determine the magnitude of core deformation, and therefore, the approximative shape of the deformed cores. From this shape, the splice loss is computed, which is sufficiently accurate for many splices and thus only by evaluating the cladding deformation as seen in ordinary temperature images.
