PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a structure of a liquid crystal display device capable of improving the luminance of a panel with respect to the liquid crystal display device of a perpendicular alignment type which controls the inclination direction of liquid crystal molecules at the time of voltage impression by utilizing the bank-like projections disposed on a substrate surface. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device has a first substrate having active elements, pixel electrodes and a first alignment film for aligning the liquid crystal molecules in a direction perpendicular to the film surface, a second substrate having common electrodes, a second alignment film for aligning the liquid crystal molecules in a direction perpendicular to the film surface and a liquid crystal layer 60 which is sealed between the first substrate and the second substrate and has negative dielectric constant anisotropy. In such a case, the device has the projections 28 for regulating the inclination direction of the liquid crystal molecules between the electrodes and the alignment films. The voltage impressed on the liquid crystal layer 60 of the region formed with the projections 28 when the driving voltage is impressed between the pixel electrodes and the common electrodes is so controlled as to be made nearly equal to or lower than the liquid crystal threshold voltage. |
