The hollow spindle, for cladding yarns, has inwards peripheral or spiral ribs (10a,10b) at the inner surface (8a) of the yarn channel (9), which is coaxial to the spindle axis. The yarn (6) moving through the yarn channel (9) is in contact with the projecting ribs only at their peaks, to be held at a gap from the inner surface (8a) of the channel (9). Preferred Features: The ribs (10a,10b) are at axial intervals of about 20 mm. The yarn channel (9) is formed by a tube (8) inserted through the central drilling (7) of the hollow spindle (1), with inner projecting ribs (10a,10b) at its inner surface (8a). The ribs (10a,10b) are formed by shaped distortion of the tube wall to give peripheral or spiral troughs (12a,12b) recessed at the outer surface of the tube (8). The tube (8) is of metal, with a matte inner surface or a fine orange peel surface structure. The inner ribs (10a,10b) project inwards by 0.5 mm from the inner tube surface (8a). The rib (10a,10b) surfaces are rounded in the direction (F) of yarn travel.
