PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reproduce data from a recording medium, which is conducting a data reproducing, and to record data onto the medium, which is conducting a data reproducing, without employing plural data recording and reproducing devices and recording media in a data recording and reproducing device that uses a recording medium on which compressed data are recorded. SOLUTION: When recording or reproducing interruption occurs during reproducing or recording, a system controller 15 interrupts the reproducing of digital data from a disk 31 or the recording of digital data to the disk 31 every time the amount of digital data to be recorded to a first memory 5 and a second memory 25 reaches a prescribed amount, executes a search operation to move an optical pickup 1 so that restarts of recording of the digital data to the disk 31 or a reproducing of the digital data from the disk 31 are repeated.
