The stator flux is concentrated in a central iron core (2). The circular stator coil (4) is wound in the large winding space between two lamination assemblies (9) with claw shaped poles. The minimum conductor length and relatively large and accessible winding space results in minimum copper loss. The resultant high leakage impedance enables voltage control by intermittently short circuiting the windings or tapped sections to provide alternative output voltages
