A planetary napping machine (10) includes a frame (32) and a napping roll drum assembly (12) having a main shaft (40) which is rotatably supported on the frame (32). One end of the main shaft (40) engages with a drive assembly (52) to drive rotation of the napping roll drum assembly (12) relative to the frame (32). The napping roll drum assembly (12) includes spaced cylinder heads (74, 76), and napping rollers (14, 16) each respectively journaled in bearing assemblies (84) circumferentially spaced around the cylinder heads. The drum assembly includes drive motors (102, 122) respectively mounted on the cylinder heads (74, 76). Endless belts (14) are interwoven about drive pulleys (138) and belt pulleys (136) on each end of the drum assembly (12) to drive rotation of the napping rollers (14, 16) relative to the cylinder heads (74, 76).
