A ventilation opening (21) is opened in or next to an upper area of a casement frame (13) of the window (20) or door and the reinforced slats (17) of the roller shutter are brought into the ventilation position where the lower end (37) of the slat is set at a certain vertical spacing from the outside sill (25) of the window whilst the slats are closed airtight. The ventilation opening is opened simultaneously as this ventilation position is reached so that cold air flows in at the top where it is warmed in the gap before entering through the upper ventilation opening into the room. The roller shutter can be driven by electric motor and an automatic programming unit controls the ventilation and opening positions.
