PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of a writing defect of wall electron charges caused by the voltage drop of scanning pulses when the size of an AC type surface discharge plasma display is increased. SOLUTION: Data pulses having a prescribed polarity are applied to odd number column data electrodes 105. Data pulses having a reverse polarity are applied to even number column data electrodes 105. Moreover, scanning pulses, whose polarities are reversed to plus and minus by alternatively generated first and second states, are applied to odd number row scanning electrodes 103 and the scanning pulses, whose polarities are oppositely reversed to plus and minus with respect to the above pulses by the alternatively generated first and second states, are applied to even number row scanning electrodes 103. Thus, pixels 120, which are arranged in lateral and longitudinal directions, i.e., arranged in two dimensions, are alternatively turned on in a weaving lattice manner and the number of the pixels 120, which are driven simultaneously, is reduced to one half.
