The backrest (17) of the automobile seat, which defines the luggage compartment and which can be folded to increase the luggage stowage area, is divided longitudinally into a leading uphostolered section (171) and a trailing cover section (172). Both sections (171,172) are linked to a swing mechanism (23,24) so that, in the loading position, the upholstered section (171) lies at the under side of the automobile roof (11) and the cover section (172) is over the seat (16) in a shrouding cover position.
