A portable telephone apparatus includes a body (10), a window section (18), a cover section (22), an optical, i.e. infrared, communication section (20), and a control section (30). The window section (18) is provided in the body (10). The cover section (22) is provided on the body (10) to cover the window section (18). The cover section (22) can be opened and closed. The optical communication section (20) is provided inside the body (10). The optical communication section (20) performs optical communication through the window section (18) when the cover section (22) is opened. The control section is provided in the body (10). The control section activates the optical communication section (20) when the cover section (22) is opened and deactivates the optical communication section (20) when the cover section (22) is closed.
