PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a shadow mask stock suitable for use with high precision at a high yield by suppressing intergranular oxidation at the time of heat treatment solving componential segregation causing the generation of the nonuniformity of stripes. SOLUTION: A continuously cast slab of an Fe-Ni alloy contg. 20 to 45% Ni is subjected to soaking at 1,200 to 1,350 deg.C for >=30 min, is furthermore heated at 1,100 to 1,350 deg.C in an atmosphere of 0.2 to 10 vol.% oxygen concn. and is next subjected to hot rolling. Prior to the soaking and the heating before the hot rolling, an oxidation preventing agent essentially consisting of glass silicate contg. SiC is preliminarily applied on the surface of the slab at the film thickness of >=0.1 mm. Since the film as the oxidation preventing agent effectively prevents the oxidation of the surface of the slab in cooperation with the low oxygen concn. in the heating atmosphere, the load to be applied to the surface maintenance of the slab and hot rolled sheet can be reduced.
